ENGR 110: Community Based Engineering Design
Francesca Narea
Course Description:
Student teams are partnered with a local community business or organization and complete a design project from problem identification through final prototype. Course focuses on "hands-on" experience in project management, building cross-disciplinary team skills, and prototyping (training and use of the SCU Maker Lab included!). The course is open to students at all levels, and all majors (engineering or non-engineering); come make a real difference in a real community!
My Project Description: Food Waste Diversion Mobile App
We are working with the Santa Clara University Center for Sustainability in order to create an app that will notify students about leftover food from events that would otherwise go to waste. Staff and administrators can post photos and descriptions of leftover food and students will receive push notifications about the food. SCU aims to be a climate neutral school, so they are aiming to reduce waste in any and all forms. SCU already has an informal food waste diversion Facebook group, so this app will formalize the organic growth of a community that values resources. The app will be launched late Spring.
My Position:
I will be working with 4 other software developers in order to polish the Extra Eats app. This includes both the implementation of a front-end user interface and a backend to handle requests and storage to a server. Below are the websites for each of my team members:
